Ap 19 Wednesday
At 4 am the car came: we had not slept at all. Ham & bread & butter at 3.30. (Alan
Beryl & Dorothy go off at 8 am, to Paris; to see Dolors & Joan
[RG]) Nono1 very sweet.
We did not sleep in the car, except that I dozed now & then, and passed Calvados2 by light; coffee St Hilaire3. We had breakfast at Caen4 with Priour: beautiful sun and children going to school. Zephyrous country & lights – heavy
frost on fields – one part of half-timber and slate. At Pont5 something – the ferry over the Seine we stopped for coffee & I bought a paper – first
news of Paris being burned. We phoned American Express6: baggage reported safe. Havre
via Harfleur7 – the bull-ring8 gone from the hill. Hotel Bordeaux9. A charming walk to buy such things as slippers, a compact, a wicker basket. Laura very tired. Sent off cable of reassurance.
